Disk Wiping Policy

Fix IT takes the privacy of the people who donate equipment to us very seriously, to help maintain this privacy we clear all disks fully of any personal data and documents.

This achieved in one of two ways: -

  1. If we have no intention of using the disk in a computer, that is to be passed on, the disk is physically dismantled and the surfaces damaged and therefore beyond use.
  2. If we are going to use the disk in a computer that is to be passed on to a new owner then the disk is securely wiped using a program that will write over the entire contents of the disk with random numbers. This will be done at least 3 times, a method used by military and security services the world over.

These methods of clearing disks will, to the best of our belief, make any data on the disks that are donated to us unrecoverable.

Where requested we will also perform disk wiping on the premises of that person who is donating the equipment to us so that they can check that the process has been carried out.
